It’s almost impossible to imagine Los Angeles without LAX serving as a major transport hub and landmark. But this photo of the airport from the ’60s offers us a glimpse of its early beginnings. We bet you wouldn’t mind a brief history lesson to accompany the photo.

After Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight in 1927, Los Angeles officials decided that the city needed its airport. And though it officially opened in 1928, it wasn’t until 1961 that the international terminal was constructed to accommodate bigger and better planes. And this weird structure is the “Theme Building,” which was commissioned in 1961.
