Special Women to Have Won the Nobel Prize with Their Remarkable Contributions

Ada E. Yonath

Israeli crystallographer Ada E. Yonath is a well-known scientist recognized for her commendable work in creating ribosome structures in a cellular body cell. She began investigating the ribosome structure through x-ray crystallography while still a postdoc at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The scientist won the Nobel Prize in Science in 2009 after her study concluded on the structure and major functions of ribosomes. In becoming the first Israeli to receive the award out of the ten Nobel laureates in Israel, Yonath became the first female scientist to win it in 45 years. She’s the director of the Weizmann Institute of Science, a research institute.
