Special Women to Have Won the Nobel Prize with Their Remarkable Contributions

Elizabeth Helen Blackburn

Honestly, it’s true that the apple doesn’t fall far away from the tree because Elizabeth Helen Blackburn became a biologist while both her parents were also medical experts. The Australian-American scientist is best known for studying telomeres, which is a unique biological structure that protects and sits at the ends of chromosomes.

Blackburn also co-discovered telomerase, a powerful enzyme that recharges the telomere. After her discovery, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2009. The multiple award winner became the first female Australian to be a Nobel Laureate. She also worked in President Bush’s administration as a medical ethicist.
