Special Women to Have Won the Nobel Prize with Their Remarkable Contributions

Barbara McClintock

The Connecticut-born Barbara McClintock was an American cytogeneticist and scientist who spearheaded the development of maize cytogenetics. Through studying hereditary patterns of corn, she proved that, at times, genetic elements can swap positions on a chromosome. Her lifetime of study and research earned her the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

McClintock, who studied botany at Cornell University, was recognized as among the best in that field, thanks to her dedication to her course. She was awarded distinguished fellowships and even got elected to the National Academy of Sciences. She holds the admirable distinction of being the only woman with an unshared Nobel Prize in her category.
