Special Women to Have Won the Nobel Prize with Their Remarkable Contributions

Rita Levi-Montalcini

The late Italian neurobiologist, Rita Levi-Montalcini, made a significant contribution to the field of biology with her discovery of the “nerve growth factor.” Working jointly with her colleague Stanley Cohen, their discovery shed more light on the healing of wounds, tumors, and other significant medical problems.

The two scientists received the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their life-transforming findings. On April 22, 2009, Levi-Montalcini, who had a twin sister, became the first Nobel laureate to reach 100 years old. She served as a Senator for Life in the Italian Senate from 2001 until her death on December 30, 2012, aged 103.
