Special Women to Have Won the Nobel Prize with Their Remarkable Contributions

Alva Myrdal

The late Alva Myrdal was a Swedish politician, diplomat, and sociologist who became a prominent disarmament movement leader. She worked for the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization and with the United Nations. The diplomat was awarded the 1982 Nobel Peace Prize together with the late Alfonso García Robles, a Mexican politician and diplomat who advocated for nuclear disarmament.

Myrdal’s award made her the fourth ever married couple laureate, her husband, professor Gunnar Myrdal, having been feted with the 1974 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. The couple became the first independent laureates in comparison to shared scientist spouse Nobel Prize winners.
