Special Women to Have Won the Nobel Prize with Their Remarkable Contributions

Mairead Maguire

Northern Ireland peace activist Mairead Maguire was formerly known as Mairéad Corrigan before she took up her husband’s name. She’s famous for her peace movements in her country and as the co-founder of the Community for Peace People, formerly known as the Women for Peace. Her co-founders are Betty Williams and Ciaran McKeown.

Maguire, together with Williams, received the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize for their dedication to encouraging peaceful resolution of the ethno-nationalist conflicts in Northern Ireland known as the Troubles. The Belfast-born activist suffered the unfortunate loss of her sister’s three children to a shooting in Belfast, an incident that pushed her to form the peace organization.
