Special Women to Have Won the Nobel Prize with Their Remarkable Contributions

Nelly Sachs

The experiences of World War II defined the career of Nelly Sachs, a German-Swedish poet and dramatist. She became a moving spokesperson for her fellow Jews who suffered untold grief during the rise of the Nazis, especially the horrors of concentration camp life. The playwright’s famous work is “Eli: Ein Mysterienspiel vom Leiden Israels.”

Sachs wrote several plays and poetry collections, such as “Zeichen im Sand” and “In den Wohnungen des Todes,” which touched on difficult subjects. Her direct and unflinching approach to disturbing matters earned her a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1966. The Stockholm-born poet’s works were published by Suhrkamp Verlag.
