The Happiest Place on Earth – 1961

Walt Disney came up with the concept for Disneyland after visiting many amusement parks with his daughters in the ’40s. In 1953, he bought a 160-acre piece of land near Anaheim and started building what would later become the iconic Disneyland. The legendary theme park was open in the summer of 1955, and the inauguration event was even broadcasted on ABC.

Known as “the happiest place on Earth,” Disneyland sure seemed to be every kid’s paradise in the ’60s. Today, the theme park remains a popular tourist attraction in California, with an annual attendance of about 3.6 million (according to Statista).
