This photo from the Great Depression era goes to show that not everything was dark and grim during America’s poorest decade. This father seems to be enjoying the time he’s spending with his young son, who’s happy enough to pose for a picture.

Families used to be much larger in the ’30s, with the average American household being composed of 4.11 people. According to the New York Times, the average household size declined to a mere 3.11 in the ’60s. In the late 1800s, it was 5.55. As reported by Statista, the number now sits at 3.13, which is surprisingly more than in the ’60s.
