The Opening of the Brooklyn Bridge – 1883

May 24, 1883: now that’s a date to remember, especially if you’re a New Yorker! It was then the iconic Brooklyn Bridge was first open to the public. At the time, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Construction wasn’t easy and took more than 14 years to complete.

Today, the Brooklyn Bridge continues to be one of the main landmarks of New York City and is used to connect Long Island to Manhattan. For years, tourist couples attached love locks to the bridge. The practice was so prevalent that it has since been made illegal and punished with fines up to $100.
