Iran Before the Revolution – Circa 1960

This modern city, booming with life, is the city of Tehran. Believe it or not, the capital of Iran was a cosmopolitan wonder in the ’60s and ’70s, before the start of the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the subsequent Iran-Iraq War. This vintage photo shows what Tehran could have been like if it wasn’t for the horrors of the war.

The main responsible for the modernization of Tehran in the ’60s was Mohammad Reza Shah, who identified many of its main issues—water pollution, high-density suburbs, and unemployment—and tried to solve them using ambitious modern projects. During the tumultuous ’80s, multiple airstrikes destroyed most of the city.
