Harlem was a notoriously poor and troubled American neighborhood since the ’20s. Despite the attempts of the government to change the situation, few things changed in Harlem during the ’70s. However, the decade was marked by a very important ideological shift, as the notions of Black Power and afro culture became more prominent.

The ’70s were the decade of Blaxploitation movies and funk-soul music, and Harlem was at the center of it all. The 2021 documentary “Summer of Soul” talks about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, which was almost like a preview of what was about to come in Harlem during the ’70s.
