Special Women to Have Won the Nobel Prize with Their Remarkable Contributions

Emily Greene Balch

Emily Greene Balch, perhaps one of the oldest people to receive the award, got the 1946 Nobel Peace Prize when she was 79 years old. The late American sociologist, pacifist, and economist was feted for her head-on tackling of difficult yet widespread social issues around poverty, child labor, and immigration at her time.

Balch dutifully combined her Wellesley College academic career with her social work, which also covered settlement work to reduce juvenile delinquency and uplift poor immigrants. The Cambridge-born professor led the peace movement at the inception of World War I in 1914 and also headed the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.
