Special Women to Have Won the Nobel Prize with Their Remarkable Contributions

Gabriela Mistral

Although she was born Lucila Godoy Alcayaga, the Chilean educator, diplomat, poet, and humanist became popular under her pseudonym Gabriela Mistral. In 1945, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making her the first Latin American author to receive the prestigious award. A tragic event in her life turned her towards poetry.

Vicuña-born Mistral lost her railway employee lover to suicide, which left her so devastated that the art form became her solace. Thankfully, the work of the former lecturer at various American universities didn’t go unnoticed. Hers was inspirational lyric poetry with powerful emotions, covering love, nature, betrayal, sorrow, a mother’s love, travel, and recovery.
