Special Women to Have Won the Nobel Prize with Their Remarkable Contributions

Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard

Although German developmental biologist Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard was called “decidedly lazy” by her high school tutor, she turned out otherwise. The geneticist published her first popular audience work in 2006, titled “Coming to Life.” Her research, which won her several awards, was centered on studying the control of fruit fly genetic mutations, an initiative she spearheaded as the leader.

One of the prominent accolades awarded to Nüsslein-Volhard was the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, shared with Edward B. Lewis and Eric Wieschaus. The scientist who specialized in protein-DNA interaction for her Ph.D. studies remains the only German woman with a science Nobel Prize.
