A SPLINTERING BAT

Earlier Major League Baseball had a problem with its bats. They were breaking at the rate of one per match and officials realized they had to do something about the problems. They got in touch with Dave Kretschmann, a research engineer, who came to the conclusion that the grain needs to be straight along the length of the bat. After his recommendations were put into action, bat-breaking rates dropped down by almost 50%.

One of the reasons, the bats were breaking was because traditional ash bats had been replaced by maple, which broke clean through. These shards would then go flying across and hurt once a fan and another time an umpire.
