Prison Break: Meet the Alcatraz Inmates Who Flew into Thin Air, Never to Be Seen Again!

The Alcatraz prisoners had to put in a lot of physical labor in addition to their prison terms. This 1955 image shows inmates constructing cargo nets as part of their work. One of the more popular Alcatraz prisoners was George Kelly Barnes, who earned the nickname “Machine Gun Kelly” because he was obsessed with automatic weaponry.

He was Alcatraz convict number 117 for 17 years. Later, he was moved to Leavenworth Federal Prison. He passed away from a heart attack there in 1954, aged 59 years. Inmates who were sent to operate in Alcatraz’s rubber shop are shown in the picture below. This image was originally taken in 1955.
