1995: The President’s Speech

In 1995, the 37th Grammy Awards were held in Los Angeles and went on without much fuss. The night’s big winner was artist Bruce Springsteen, who bagged an impressive four awards. However, the awards took an unexpected turn of events due to the president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences speech.

Going against instructions from CBS executives, the president made on-air comments criticizing the attempts to cut, or possibly end, federal funding of the National Endowment for the Arts, Public Broadcasting Service, and National Public Radio. Most people were surprised that CBS hadn’t pulled the plug on him.
