1977: A Global Night

With the Grammys only being held and broadcast live in the U.S., there was a need for globalization, and the 19th Grammy Awards in February 1977, was the perfect testing ground. CBS, who had now taken over the broadcast, transmitted the telecast to Hong Kong and the Far East via satellite.

Andy Williams hosted the awards for the seventh and final year. Due to globalization, Stevie Wonder joined in and performed live in Lagos, Nigeria. Unfortunately, technical difficulties made it hard for him to be heard or seen. That wouldn’t be a bother to him, though, as he bagged four Grammys that night.
