Fabriquer ses vêtements était sa façon de militer
Le Mahatma Gandhi a marqué l’histoire pour son approche non violente de la protestation, laquelle ne se réduisait pas à une grève de la faim. Gandhi pouvait en effet tisser ses propres vêtements au lieu d’acheter ceux qui étaient fabriqués par les Britanniques pour protester contre ces derniers.
Il avait un rouet de tissage dans sa cellule, lequel est présent sur cette photo prise par Margaret Bourke-White lorsqu’elle est venue lui rendre visite. Son style de protestation pacifique a d’ailleurs été fructueux puisque la Grande-Bretagne a fini par reconnaître l’indépendance de l’Inde en 1947. Gandhi continue aussi d’être reconnu aujourd’hui comme un symbole de la paix.
