Bathing Suit Laws – Circa 1920

At the beginning of the 20th century, people weren’t allowed to go to the beach wearing whatever they wanted. There were strict rules in place for both men and women, and females were sometimes even required to wear stockings! Outside of the United States, bathing suit laws were a little more liberal.

For that reason, one Australian woman vacationing in Boston was arrested in 1907 for wearing a sleeveless bathing suit at the beach. The woman was called Annette Kellerman and, according to The RMN Agency, she wasn’t aware that swim-attire laws were stricter in America than in the Land Down Under.
