New York City is known as a “melting pot” because it has always been one of the most culturally-diverse cities in the United States. The first place many immigrants looking for the American dream saw after a long boat ride, the Big Apple was booming with life.

However, it’s possible that NYC is also known as a “melting pot” because it was so warm during the summer. In the summer of 1943, temperatures were literally and metaphorically high, especially considering that was the year of the Harlem riots, which were caused by a police shooting and resulted in the arrest of about 600 people.
