Jack Straw became a barrister after graduating law from the University of Leeds. In the government, he advised Barbara Castle, who chose him to replace her as the representative for Blackburn when she lost her seat in the 1979 election.

During the Brown administration, he held the positions of Lord High Chancellor of the United Kingdom and Secretary of State for Justice from 2007 to 2010. Straw, alongside Brown and Alistair Darling, is the only person to have worked in the Cabinet of a Labor administration consistently from 1997 to 2010. As of 2022, several unreliable sources were speculating about his fortune but it remained unknown.
