What the Heck Is That? Ordinary Things That Look Insane Microscopic!

Grass Blades Are Not So Soft

Take a blade of grass, zoom way in, and suddenly, it’s not so chill. Under a microscope, that soft green sliver turns into a spiky jungle of tiny structures. Rows of silica-based cells—like mini glass shards—help defend the plant from hungry insects. These structures can even give the grass its scratchy feel.

Then there are stomata, little pores that open and close like mouths, which help regulate airflow and water. It’s basically a living system disguised as a lawn. So while grass seems simple from above, beneath the lens, it’s armed and armored and constantly working on its plant-level hustle.
