Under a lens, pollen grains ditch the gentle springtime vibe and look like tiny armored planets. Some are round and smooth, but most wear spiked, ridged, or grooved designs like they’re dressed for a mini sci-fi convention. These tough outer shells—called exines—protect the genetic payload inside and help the grain stick to insects, fur, or whatever breeze carries it.

Each plant species has its distinct style, so pollen grains come in a surprising variety of shapes and textures. They may cause sneezes on Earth, but up close, they look more like they belong floating through space than drifting through the air.
