Today, it’s almost unthinkable that a great European capital such as Berlin could be divided into two completely different cities. West Germany and East Germany were physically attached to one another but represented the major division that existed between capitalism and communism during the Cold War.

While West Germany thrived under a capitalist economic system, life was much harder in East Germany. The Soviet side of the wall ranked among the ten greatest economies of the world at the start of the ’80s, but that didn’t quite translate into quality of life for its citizens. In 1989, Germany was finally unified.
