The Mighty Banjo – Circa 1920

The banjo is one of America’s most classic musical instruments, and it’s mostly associated with ragtime and bluegrass music made in the countryside. But did you know that the origins of this string instrument date back to the 17th century? The precursor of the banjo was taken to North America and the Caribbean by enslaved people originally from Africa.

The enslaved population later took the banjo to the South, where it caught the eye of some White natives. Among the first notable White banjo players is surgeon John Allen Whyte, who learned how to play the instrument as a child.
