Was The World Cooler 50 Years Ago? These Vintage Photos Will Make You Want To Go Back In Time!

More Than a Hairstyle – 1951

While the mohawk peaked during the ’80s, it’s been around for much, much longer. The boy in the picture was proudly boasting one as early as 1951, but that wasn’t even the beginning of the hairstyle. In 2003, a 2,000-year-old bog body was discovered near Dublin. And guess what? The mummified man had a mohawk!

The mohawk was also used by American soldiers in the Vietnam War as a way of intimidating their enemies. Today, mohawks are most commonly associated with punk music and alternative subcultures, but famous jazz musicians such as Sonny Rollins already had mohawks in the ’50s.
