Freedom Was a Process – 1940

The man in the picture was a free and stylish American who looked like the sharpest-dressed guy in town. However, life was still very hard for African-Americans in 1940. The process of desegregation in the United States started in the 1800s when Iowa desegregated public schools in 1868.

Desegregation only ended in 1963, the year when South Carolina finally desegregated its public school system (it was the last American state to do so). As for desegregation in its entirety, it was only banned at a federal level in 1964. It was only then that President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act.
