Depression-Era Millionaires – 1939

The Great Depression ended in 1939, and not everybody was left with nothing at the end of America’s most impactful economic crisis. As proven by the dandy fellow in the picture, many people grew their fortunes during the Great Depression.

According to History.com, notable businessmen such as Jean Paul Getty and Howard Hughes became richer as the vast majority of the population was becoming poorer. Michael Cullen, the man who opened one of America’s first supermarkets (the iconic King Kullen), also made a fortune during the Great Depression. In Hollywood, movie stars such as Mae West earned as much as $300K per movie appearance.
