College Education – 1930

The man in the picture looks like an actor ready to portray Sherlock Holmes in a play, but he’s reportedly a real-life professor. In the ’30s, higher levels of studies were still inaccessible to the vast majority of people. During the first half of the 20th century, college-level schooling was a privilege almost exclusively reserved for white males from the elite.

According to Encyclopedia.com, though, the early 1900s were a time of positive change. In 1910, women and minorities already made for an impressive 39 percent of all undergraduates. Nowadays, more women finish school than men, as reported by the National Center for Education Statistics.
