Playing on words can have different effects on people, and can either be meant as jokes or rhetorics. Karen here wasn’t getting the jokes quite clearly. Some people prefer directness as opposed to ambiguous humor. The concept of punning is ancient and has been recorded to date as far back as Mayan times.

People take punning so seriously that there’s an annual competition called the O. Henry Pun-Off Words Championships. He has a better shot at the competition than Karen.
