Ellen Church Walked So These Ladies Could Run

This picture reminds us of how it all began. On May 15, 1930, Ellen Church became the first female flight attendant in the history of air travel. Of course, the term “Stewardess” was popular back then. But she didn’t get the job simply by walking up and asking for an interview.

Church had to argue that airplanes should have nurses onboard because they would help calm people’s fears of flying. Today, these young women work for the Irish airline RyanAir. And while the woman in front has her RyanAir lanyard on display, the second flight attendant is sporting a “Harvard” lanyard.
