The smile on this young boy’s face is absolutely endearing as he meets Konishiki Yasokichi. The American sumo wrestler was nicknamed the “Meat Bomb” because at one time he weighed 633 lbs, the then-heaviest recorded weight for a sumo wrestler. He was a promising student and was discovered by a sumo scouting agent at 18 years old.
He was the first foreign wrestler to reach the level of reach ōzeki, the second-highest rank in sumo wrestling. He was close to reaching the grand champion rank of yokozuna but after a conversation about whether it was culturally appropriate as Yasokichi was not Japanese-born erupted on social media, it never happened. After retiring, he became a Japanese entertainer.
