Special Women to Have Won the Nobel Prize with Their Remarkable Contributions

Bertha Sophie Felicita von Suttner

Although Austrian novelist and pacifist Baroness Bertha Sophie Felicita von Suttner was the second female Nobel laureate, she was the first woman recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. In fact, she was the first winner in her country. She was born Countess Kinsky von Chinic und Tettau and became known as the “generalissimo of the peace movement.”

Suttner authored an anti-war book titled “Lay Down Your Arms” that won her the prize in 1905. The novel turned out to be influential during the century, carrying with it a strong anti-militaristic mission. The peace activist and staunch women’s liberation supporter died in 1914, aged 71.
