Special Women to Have Won the Nobel Prize with Their Remarkable Contributions

Leymah Gbowee

From 1989 to 2003, Liberia knew no peace and, as a result, many people died and others were left nursing injuries. Leymah Gbowee was one of the bravest heroines to have stepped out as a peace activist during those trying times. She led a powerful peace movement, Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace, and helped end the war in 2003.

Gbowee’s efforts earned her a Nobel Peace Prize in 2011, together with other noble women, Tawakkol Karman and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. They were credited with ensuring the safety of women and their rights and participation in making peace reign in their countries.
