Special Women to Have Won the Nobel Prize with Their Remarkable Contributions

Wangarĩ Muta Maathai

The late Wangarĩ Muta Maathai, a Nyeri-born Kenyan environmentalist, became a trailblazer as the first East and Central African woman that earned a doctorate degree. The social and political activist pushed for the advancement of human rights and democracy alongside her passionate fight for environmental conversation. Before she passed in 2011, she had bagged several local and international awards.

Maathai was the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her activism. The American-schooled writer spoke at special General Assembly sessions and at the United Nations. In 1977, Maathai put up the Green Belt Movement, an environmental non-governmental organization charged with planting trees and championing women’s rights.
