Special Women to Have Won the Nobel Prize with Their Remarkable Contributions

Rigoberta Menchú Tum

In 1992, Rigoberta Menchú Tum was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her push for social justice in Guatemala. The feminist and human rights activist got the world’s attention with her memoir “I, Rigoberta Menchú,” recapping the murders of her mother and brother. She’s K’iche’, which is what the indigenous Maya people of the Americas are called.

Tum, the founder of Winaq, the first indigenous political party in Guatemala, pushed for ethno-cultural reconciliation and social justice locally and internationally while focusing on the need to respect the rights of indigenous people. The UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador has received several prestigious awards for her work, including the 1998 Prince of Asturias Award.
