Captured by Al Bello, this photograph shows an Olympic swimmer who represents the United States emerging from the water. Instead, the swimmer looks like they are a mutant sea creature. From the angle the photo was captured, the swimmer looks like they lack a nose and are a part of the water as it flows smoothly down the head and face without a break.

This phenomenon occurs due to the laminar flow of water. Water molecules when at low velocity, tend to move in parallel layers to one another. The opposite of this is turbulent flow; when waves and currents are created in the water. Laminar flow also occurs in water due to its high viscosity.
