The corridor had cages and was unmanned, but the inmates could reach the roof if they dug holes that were large enough to fit through. They had to get the roof through a sizable shaft. After they discovered that the tunnels were blocked off with cement, they found it unbearable. Fortunately, they came across an open shaft, which they used a makeshift wrench to clear the view.

In May 1962, Frank and the Anglin brothers succeeded in tearing down the barriers. They fused and stitched raincoats together to make life jackets. They used more than 50 raincoats to help them survive in the cold waters of San Francisco Bay!
