Trying Macaroni And Cheese-Flavored Ice Cream

Yes, you read that right: macaroni and cheese-flavored ice cream exists. One of the most popular ice cream shops in the U.S., Van Leeuwen, collaborated with Kraft to create this interestingly flavored dessert. For those who don’t know, New York City-based Van Leeuwen has become quite the rage over the past few years. So, in honor of National Macaroni and Cheese Day (July 14), the ice cream shop teamed up with Kraft to make an extraordinary flavor. After they “perfected” the taste, the two companies decided to sell it through an ice cream truck. On July 14, instead of serving chocolate and vanilla, there was mac and cheese! After customers had a chance to taste a scoop for free Union Square Wednesday.

Afterward, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream locations in New York, Los Angeles, and Houston sold the cheesy goodness for $12 a pint. So, how did ice cream and mac and cheese lovers like the new flavor? Let’s find out…

Believe it or not, most people loved the macaroni and cheese ice cream! “It’s kind of amazing. [It tastes] salty and sweet like you might think but it also has a vanilla to it,” Addie Benge, who waited in line for quite some time, told NBC. Benge also stated that she’d bring some macaroni and cheese-flavored ice cream to her family and friends. “Yes, [I would buy it] for the novelty… I’d let everyone else try it. I’d have it at a dinner party,” she added.

“Yeah, it’s really good. It’s salty and sweet. I like it a lot,” added another customer. In fact, the ice cream went so viral that, in the middle of the promotion, Kraft’s website servers crashed. People desperately wanted to try the new flavor! “I’d recommend it for the adventurous eater to step outside their comfort zone,” said another of the satisfied customers.

To really put the ice cream to the test, Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager tried it on The Today Show. The two showed everyone that curiosity can be quite rewarding! “It tastes likes mac n’ cheese frozen,” Hoda said about the Van Leeuwen and Kraft release. “It’s like salty ice cream.”

Sadly, if you want to try the flavor, you might need to wait a while. There’s a good chance it will never come back! Currently, neither Kraft nor Van Leeuwen knows if the macaroni and cheese-flavored ice cream will return.
