Der am 26.02.1983 in Brasilien geborene Portugiese kann insgesamt vier WM-Teilnahmen für sich verbuchen, während denen er insgesamt zwölf Mal auf dem Platz stand. Sein erstes WM-Spiel bestritt der Innenverteidiger 2010 in der Vorrunde gegen Brasilien, das damals mit einem für beide Mannschaften glücklosen 0:0 endete.
Zwei WM-Treffer, eine gelbe und eine rote Karte hat Pepe auf seinem Konto stehen. Das letzte Mal stand er am 10.12.2022 bei der WM in Katar auf dem Feld, als Marokko die Portugiesen im Viertelfinale knapp mit 1:0 besiegten. Der dreimalige Champions-League Sieger führte damals seine Mannschaft als Kapitän auf das Feld.
