Jim Leighton war, wie sollte es in dieser Rangliste auch anders sein, für lange Zeit Stammtorwart der schottischen Nationalmannschaft. Der am 24.07.1958 geborene Keeper kam so auf insgesamt neun Matches bei einer Fußball-WM und debütierte beim Turnier 1986 in der Vorrunde gegen Dänemark, das Schottland 0:1 verlor.
Ein 0:0 Unentschieden gegen Uruguay bescherte ihm auch das einzige Spiel ohne Gegentor bei einer WM. Mit zwölf Gegentoren schaffte es der Schotte auch nicht über die Vorrundenspiele hinaus. Die 0:3 Niederlage gegen Marokko am 23.06.1998 bei der WM in Frankreich setzte dann auch den Schlusspunkt bei den WM-Endrunden.
