Before her harrowing incident, 26-year-old Samantha Hartsoe was just another young woman living in New York. Freshly graduated from college, Hartsoe found herself a lovely apartment in the city. At the time, she had no idea that, in just a few months, she would become a viral sensation around the world!

At first, everything seemed fine in Hartsoe’s new apartment. She had friends over, felt safe, and spent some time sprucing up the place. Pretty soon, the young woman really started to fall in love with her new home! However, nothing lasts forever. Within just a few weeks, Hartsoe made a creepy discovery inside her new abode…

A Mystery Develops

The incredible “New York Mystery,” as Hartsoe later titled it, began when she noticed a cold draft inside her home. Even stranger, the cold wind continued to blow, even with the heat on and all windows and doors sealed.

For a couple of days, the persistent problem did not bother Hartsoe very much. But, as time went on, it started to annoy the 26-year-old more and more. She desperately wanted to know where the creepy cold breeze was coming from. So, one day, Hartsoe decided to try and trace the odd airflow to its source. But the more she looked into the breeze, the more questions emerged!

A Cold Wind Blows

It only took a few minutes for Hartsoe to discover the source of the creepy breeze. Thankfully, it wasn’t a haunted closet or anything like that. Instead, the airflow seemed to originate from her bathroom!

“I’m in my New-York city apartment, and it’s cold. Obviously, it doesn’t matter how high the heat goes, I’m cold… I walk into my bathroom, and I feel cold air blowing on me,” Hartsoe said in a video she uploaded to TikTok. There was only one problem with the breeze coming from the bathroom: “It was weird because I don’t have a vent that I know of in there that blows cold air.” While Hartsoe had found where breeze started, she still had no idea what was causing it…

Searching The Bathroom

Initially, Hartsoe wondered if there could have once been a vent in the bathroom that had since been painted over. However, a thorough search of the ceiling revealed no vents. And the young woman soon also determined there were no cracks in the floor.

So, Hartsoe started looking for clues long the walls of the bathroom – and that’s when she made a startling discovery! The air seemed to be coming from the mirror! All of a sudden, the young woman felt incredibly unsafe in her apartment. Especially if there was a space behind the bathroom mirror. Still, even then, Hartsoe did not know the enormous scope of her discovery.

An Odd Bathroom Mirror

Once Hartsoe realized that the draft was coming from the bathroom mirror, she started to take a closer look at the mirror. The more she looked at it, the stranger it seemed. After investigating, she noticed that the mirror was loose and not even properly connected to the wall!

“I realized that it’s not connected to the wall, which seems a little strange,” Hartsoe said. While she understands that some mirrors are just hung up, the “cold air [made her] a little suspect.” Of course, as you might imagine, Hartsoe instantly started wondering what could be hidden behind the bathroom mirror. But nothing in her imagination could ever prepare her for what she found behind the mirror…

Long-Lost Cabinet?

On the one hand, Hartsoe thought she might have discovered something cool, like a medicine cabinet her landlord had forgotten to tell her about. Of course, there was only one way to find out the truth: remove the bathroom mirror. So, without wasting a second, Hartsoe set her camera up and started to remove the mirror.

However, as the young woman started to remove the bathroom mirror, a sneaking suspicion crept into her mind. Sure, it could be something cool, like a long-lost medicine cabinet. But, on the other hand, it might be something far more sinister and terrifying…

Something Out of Candyman

As Hartsoe started to remove the bathroom mirror, she suddenly remembered a classic ’90s horror film: Candyman. For those who have not seen the hit horror movie, which stars Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd, there is one particular scene where the main characters discover a hidden torture chamber behind a bathroom mirror.

Could something like that possibly be hidden behind her bathroom mirror? Well, Hartsoe was about to find out, as the mirror came off the wall without issue. And what the young woman found behind it made her jaw drop! It turns out the Candyman comparison was not that far off…

Revealing A Massive Hole

As Hartsoe removed the mirror, she felt surprised at how easily it came off. Most mirrors are attached with screws or bolts. However, the young woman found her bathroom mirror was just hanging loose. And things only became stranger and stranger from there on!

When Hartsoe removed the bathroom mirror, she found herself face to face with a gaping hole in her wall. No cabinet, no shelves, no electrical panel – nothing but a square of pitch-black darkness. The young woman could hardly believe what she had discovered, and her mind exploded with questions. But she kept coming back to one question again and again: what hid beyond the hole?

Something Lurking Inside?

We may never know why Hartsoe did not immediately call her landlord to have them fix the hole in her wall. Most likely, she wanted to have plenty of video and photographic evidence to show to her landlord. And, when such a mystery stands before you, it’s hard not to want to solve it!

So, Hartsoe decided to do a little more investigating into the hole in her bathroom wall. But she wasn’t about to jump into the hole herself – at least not yet! Before diving into the darkness, the young woman decided to simply extend her hand into the darkness and film what lay beyond, hoping to solve the mystery. However, when she watched the footage, Hartsoe only had more questions!

An Entire Room

Hartsoe stuck her hand through the hole where the bathroom mirror once hung and could not believe what her phone recorded. “There is a room back there,” she says in the video. That’s right! It turns out there was much more than a hole in the wall – the hole led to an entire room. And, looking at the footage, Hartsoe could see that the room continued further. What else could possibly hide behind her bathroom wall?

Entirely wrapped up in the mystery, Hartsoe made a surprising decision: “I need more answers. I have to go in and figure out what is on the other side of my bathroom.” Of course, the young woman could not go on such an adventure alone…

Making A Night Out Of It

No questions asked: going into a mysterious hole hidden behind your bathroom mirror alone is a bad idea. But inviting some friends over and making a night of it? Well, that’s just good fun! At least, that’s undoubtedly what Hartsoe hoped would happen. So, she contacted a few friends and convinced them to come over and work as her own amateur film crew!

Soon enough, Hartsoe’s friend, John, came over to help film. At first, he tried to talk her out of it, asking, “Are you sure you want to do this?” But Hartsoe had already made up her mind. Now, all that she had left to do was gear up!

Preparing for Adventure

If you are going to go “cave diving” in your apartment walls, you need to take a few precautions. And that’s precisely what Hartsoe did! First, she equipped herself with an N95 mask, in case the air inside the mystery room was stale or there was mold present. Next, she created a DIY headlight using a headband and a powerful flashlight. MacGyver would be proud!

Most importantly, Hartsoe grabbed a hammer, just in case she came face-to-face with someone dangerous in the mysterious room beyond. As you might imagine, as she gripped the hammer in her hand, the young woman started having second thoughts…

Having Second Thoughts

Understandably, Hartsoe felt more than a little scared as she prepared to enter the mysterious room hidden behind her bathroom mirror. After all, there was a reason she grabbed the hammer. “What if someone’s in there right now?” Hartsoe asks herself in the video, before visibly shuttering in fear. It was undoubtedly a creepy thought!

There was also another, more practical problem: Hartsoe was not entirely sure that she would fit through the hole in the wall! However, the young woman knew she could not spend another night in her apartment if she did not discover the truth. So, with John on camera duty, Hartsoe hoisted herself up and began making her way into the mystery room.

Break On Through To The Other Side

As it turns out, while Hartsoe is not a large person by any stretch of the imagination, she did have some struggles getting through the hole in her bathroom wall. After all, it was even smaller than the mirror! Of course, John was there to catch all of Hartsoe’s hysterical struggling on camera.

However, after a few minutes, the young woman managed to back herself into the hole. It’s at this point we need to say: if you should ever find a mysterious hole hidden behind your bathroom mirror, do not climb inside. Instead, call your landlord. But her desire to know more – and her desire to be safe in her home – pushed Hartsoe into the hole.

Could Not Go Back

Once Hartsoe was on the other side of the wall, she only found her problems mounting. First, she could almost immediately see that there was more to this hidden area than just the initial room. Hartsoe could not help but wonder if someone had been living behind her walls all this time, without her ever knowing.

Even worse, the young woman quickly realized that it would be far more difficult, if not impossible, for her to return to her bathroom. That only meant one thing: find another way out. “I have to find my way out of here. I have to go back through that hole, which is pretty much impossible, or I have to find the exit of this place, which means I have to, at this point, explore it all,” she said in the now-viral video.

How Long Had It Been Like This?

The more that Hartsoe looked around, the more she realized that the hidden apartment must have been very old. “I’m not sure if it was being renovated or if it is empty. It’s really old, and nobody’s been in there a while. The shower-bathroom area is all piping — there’s no actual bathtub or toilet. The floor, and what I think would be the kitchen, was ripped up,” she explains in the video.

Hartsoe could not help but wonder if she had stumbled onto some great mystery. After all, this was New York, one of the hottest rental markets in the world! Why would any landlord leave such a property renovated and tenant-less?

Completely Abandoned

Shortly after Hartsoe entered in the mystery apartment, she realized she had forgotten an essential piece of gear: cold-weather clothes! “It’s freezing in here,” she says in the video. After looking around some more, Hartsoe soon found the reason why: first, some of the windows were left open and, more importantly, the heat in the hidden apartment did not work.

To Hartsoe, that seemed to settle it. No one could be in here – it was simply too cold. However, what the young woman found next, changed her mind completely. In fact, what she found would make her cement up the mirror before her landlord could even respond!

Signs Of Activity

At first, it seemed that no one had lived in the hidden apartment for some time. However, Hartsoe first changed her mind about that. As she entered in one of the rooms connected to the main room, she found numerous black garbage bags scattered all around the place. It almost looked as though someone has been trying to leave the apartment – but never did. Things were certainly getting more spooky by the minute!

Even worse, that was far from the only artifact that Hartsoe found that made her wonder if someone had been living there the entire time…

Signs of Life

As she walked down the hallway, Hartsoe found what she called a “sign of life:” a water bottle, half full. “I was kind of expecting there to be somebody, especially with the water bottle being there. And that definitely put me on edge,” the young woman later explained. Suddenly, Hartsoe felt like turning back. After all, someone could have been hiding a closet, just waiting for someone to come in and investigate!

However, Hartsoe knew she needed to find out where the hidden apartment ended. As she crept down the hallways, the young woman soon discovered that the secret apartment was much larger than she ever imagined…

More Than She Ever Imagined

As Hartsoe came to the end of the hallway, she quickly realized that the secret apartment was much larger than she had initially imagined. In fact, it was bigger than her own apartment! At the end of the hallway, Hartsoe found more room and even a staircase heading down. That’s right – there was a whole other level to explore!

At this point, Hartsoe felt she had come too far to turn back. Plus, she not only needed to find a different way out, but also make sure that no one was living downstairs. She certainly couldn’t sleep in her apartment anymore if anyone was living down there! Taking a deep breath, Hartsoe started to descend the stairs to the first floor of the secret apartment…
