KFC’s Beyond Fried Chicken

KFC

For those who don't know, KFC’s Beyond Fried Chicken has finally hit locations nationwide, after almost three years of development. Why did it take so long and why is the Beyond Fried Chicken still not vegetarian? Let's find out...

KFC Prepared Its Release For Over Two Years

While fried chicken sandwiches were the number one fast-food item of the past few years, plant-based meats have also done quite well in the quick service world. So, it should come as no surprise that Kentucky Fried Chicken announced that its new Beyond Fried Chicken, a partnership with Beyond Meat, has hit stores nationwide. Previously, KFC tried limited-time edition of the Beyond Fried Chicken in both Atlanta and southern California locations. It sold out quickly in both cases.

“We couldn’t be prouder to partner with KFC to offer a best-in-class product that not only delivers the delicious experience consumers expect from this iconic chain but also provides the added benefits of plant-based meat,” the Founder and CEO of Beyond Meat, Ethan Brown, explained. “We are truly thrilled to make it available to consumers nationwide.”

In addition to the new product, Kentucky Fried Chicken also created a new “Magic Chicken Carpet” campaign. It stars social media star Liza Koshy to target a younger demographic. However, there's just one problem: believe it or not, Beyond Fried Chicken is not vegetarian. That's right!

Beyond Fried Chicken Is Vegetarian…Right?

After testing the Beyond Fried Chicken formula and perfecting it for nearly three years, everyone expected a chicken that both vegans and vegetarians could enjoy. However, Kentucky Fried Chicken has made it clear that the product is “not prepared in [a] vegan/vegetarian manner." Why? Well the company fries the food in the same oil as the real chicken products. KFC is not alone in this decision, either. McDonald’s new McPlant burger ends up on the same grill as beef burgers, as does Burger King’s Impossible Whopper

Why do something like that? “Our target customers for this product are flexitarians looking to incorporate plant-based meat or more diverse protein options into their diets, and those who want to experience the signature flavors of KFC in a plant-based option,” a KFC spokesperson explained in an announcement.

Still interested in picking up some Beyond Fried Chicken nuggets? Well, they start at $6.99, the same price as a six-piece chicken tenders order. Buyers also receive a KFC dipping sauce, like Honey BBQ, Honey Mustard, or Ranch. Those interested can also pick up the Beyond Fried Chicken nuggets as a 12 piece order or as a combo with fries and drink.
