The Lost Art of Hitchhiking – 1973

According to Vox, the “art” of hitchhiking is almost lost now. Hitchhiking is discouraged by the authorities and is even forbidden in some American states. Asking strangers for a ride is perceived as dangerous, and so is picking up people on the road. In the ’60s and ’70s, hitchhiking was seen as a common and effective method of transportation.

Holding a bouquet of flowers, the Oklahoma girl in the picture was enjoying America in the ’70s, back when it was okay for a young woman to ask strangers for a ride. She was feeling so free that she didn’t even need slippers!
