Just like it does every year, McDonald’s McRib will return to the fast-food giant’s menu for a short time. However, this time around, the sandwich will become a lot more than another menu item. Instead, McDonald’s will also release a McRib NFT. That’s right!

For those who don’t know, the story of the McDonald’s McRib begins back in 1981, when it was first released. However, sadly, the sandwich, “seasoned boneless pork patty slathered in BBQ sauce and topped with slivered onions and tart dill pickles, all on a homestyle bun,” did not take off in the way the company wanted. But along the way, the fast-food company created an even better idea: making the sandwich a limited-time deal every year. Now, people wait in line for the McRib each fall! If you want to know more about the history of the McRib, click here! However, if you want to “never again have to say goodbye to the sandwich you love,” McDonald’s has something new for you…

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the legendary sandwich, McDonald’s plans on a very special giveaway: 10 lucky winners will get a McRib NFT – non-fungible tokens. In case you do not know, an NFT stands for “non-fungible token.” It’s a type of new art that, thanks to blockchain technology, can never be replicated. Of course, criminals can forge paintings, sculptures, and the like. However, due to the cryptic blockchain, the same type of tech that powers cryptocurrency like Bitcoin, criminals can never replicate NFTs, making them non-fungible. So, while the art might be digital, it’s guaranteed to remain rare and one-of-a-kind forever.

Not For Everyone

The competition for the McRib NFT will take place throughout November. In order to enter, head on over to the McDonald’s Twitter and follow the link. Following the competition, the fast-food company will choose ten people to win the “exclusive McRib NFT to add to their personal collection and enjoy even when it’s not on the menu.”

However, one rule has stopped many from entering: winners will need a crypto wallet to receive their prize. “A valid Twitter account and internet access are required to participate,” the giveaway page reads. “Winners will need, within the timeframe detailed below, a valid cryptocurrency wallet capable of transacting in Ethereum, which can be established without cost. Participants and winners are not required to purchase any Ethereum cryptocurrency.” Also, the fast-food chain said that the “value of the McRib NFT can vary,” including the loss of all value.

Of course, many other companies have also tried to find ways to ride the NFT wave. For instance, the NFT of Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s first tweet sold for $2.9 million. Meanwhile, a 10-second digital collage from the artist Beeple went for $69 million at auction. It took the artist 13 years to complete the collage. That’s right! Unfortunately, the McDonald’s McRib NFT is not that valuable – each one has a value of $20.
