Girl Scout Cookie Surplus

Girl Scouts of the USA

Many all around the United States look forward to buying a few - or more - boxes of Girl Scout cookies each year. However, in 2020 the organization faced a challenging year, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now, the Girl Scouts have millions of boxes of unsold cookies. Read on to find out what you can do to help!

A Hard Year for the Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts of the USA

Each year, Girl Scouts usually sell around 200 million boxes of cookies. That's right! However, while this year's numbers haven't been calculated yet, the organization knows that they have plenty of leftover boxes. As a spokesperson explained to CNN, there are about 15 million boxes of unsold cookies leftover. Nearly 12 million of those boxes never even left the baking warehouses! "It's exceedingly rare to have significant excess inventory but the pandemic greatly impacted our cookie program, despite demand for cookies remaining strong," the spokesperson explained.

Of course, this should really come as no surprise. While the Girl Scouts discourage door-to-door sales, troops usually sell the delicious cookies outsides of grocery stores, public buildings, and the like. However, since 2019, these methods have remained out of the question, given the COVID-19 pandemic. While not every state has experienced a surplus, many around the country have. So, the organization has started debuting new ways for consumers to pick up these leftover cookies. And now it's easier than ever for you to help!

How You Can Help The Girl Scout Cookie Surplus

Love Girl Scout cookies like nearly everyone else? Well, there's good news! You can help demolish the cookie surplus! And now, there are more ways than ever to pick up your favorite box of cookies. For big orders, your best bet is to head to the official Girl Scout website, where you can buy in bulk. However, you can also pick up Girl Scout cookies on Grubhub. Yup! The organization partnered with the food delivery service earlier this year.

The best part of all? You can feel great about picking up a box of Girl Scout cookies. As the organization explained, 100% of the proceeds from each box "stay local with the troop and its council to power essential leadership programming throughout the year, so we did everything we could to mitigate those losses to recoup lost revenue in addition to helping the bakers sell through their inventory."

So, go and fill up those online shopping carts! And while you're picking up a box for yourself, why not head over to the donation page, where you can purchase a box of cookies for "first responders, food banks and other worthy causes." What a fantastic idea!
